Nature Uncut Tours

Recommended Nature Lodges

Sometimes in the ecotourism business one comes across places that stand out from the rest. Places with exceptional natural settings, superb hosts, quality food, superior comfort and attention to detail. During our tours we have discovered some unique gems – places that not too many people know about (and we kind of hope it stays that way!). These places are not over-touristy or over-the-top luxury, yet they are extremely comfortable and provide exceptional service and quality. We think the settings of these lodges are superb and use them whenever possible on our tours. Book one of our tours and we will take you there, or click on the links below and we will book one of these lodges for you. If you enjoy exploring wild places without sacrificing on your home comforts, we are certain you will love these lodges as much as we do.

Otter’s Den River Lodge – Blyde River

Located on a small island in the middle of the Blyde River, Otters Den is an idyllic retreat set in pristine natural forest. To reach this exclusive, family-run lodge, one crosses the river via a suspension bridge, signaling your escape into nature. Hippos wallow in front of your chalet, Narina Trogons dive between the trees, and at dinner you can hear Bushbabies and Wood Owls in the branches above. Accommodation is in luxury wooden cabins, complete with en-suite bathrooms, bush showers, mosquito nets and electric blankets (in wintertime). The lodge has been designed to ensure privacy and tranquility, the food is always excellent (including freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast!), and the owners, Marie-Tinka and Wynand Uys, are extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and the surrounding environment. There are plenty of activities in the area, including boat trips on the Blyde Dam, the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, white-water rafting and even hot air ballooning (operated by Otters Den). The lodge is located just one hour from the magnificent Kruger National Park.

Rates: From R730 per person sharing (including dinner and breakfast).

Blue Jay Lodge – Hazyview

Blue Jay Lodge is a 4 star graded B&B guest lodge situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Hazyview, just 10 minutes from the game-rich southern section of Kruger National Park. The attractive open-plan design of Blue Jay Lodge, plus the small luxuries and attention to detail, make this intimate Lodge quite exceptional. The surrounding indigenous trees create a remarkably private setting which attracts numerous spectacular bird species - including Cuckoos, Sunbirds and Purple-crested Turacos. Phil and Margi Nichols are excellent hosts who will ensure that your stay at Blue Jay Lodge is truly memorable. They are knowledgeable about birdlife and can offer plenty of advice about exploring Kruger, the Blyde River Canyon and the Lowveld area. Breakfasts at Blue Jay are always excellent and are taken on the balcony between the trees. For evening dining there are a number of excellent restaurants within a 5km radius of the Lodge - Phil and Margi will be happy to make recommendations. Accommodation is luxurious, including sumptuous bathrooms, king-sized beds, private decks, fully-stocked mini-bars, DSTV, air-conditioning, bathrobes, mosquito nets and fine linen.

Francolinhof Guest House – Hermanus

Francolinhof is a 4 star graded guest house situated on the very edge of Hermanus, bordering the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. To the one side of the lodge is a view of the majestic, fynbos-clad Mosselberg peak and to the other, a view of Hermanus and the tranquil Walker Bay. This lodge is an ideal place from which to explore the Overberg, and there are plenty of activities in the area, including whale-watching (from July to November), bird-watching, nature trails, Great White Shark diving and wine-tasting in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Since Francolinhof borders a nature reserve, it is visited by numerous spectacular birds (including francolins) and you can stroll directly onto the mountain from the garden. Relax with sundowners on your balcony as the sun sets over the bay and enjoy a peaceful night's sleep far from the noise of traffic.

De Zeekoe Guest Farm - Oudtshoorn

De Zeekoe is a working alfalval farm just outside of Oudtshoorn in the heart of the Little Karoo. Luxury and standard rooms are provided at the main house, but we enjoy the rustic cabins situated on stilts overlooking the lake. With only four cabins available, you are ensured privacy and tranquility and there are numerous luxurious touches, including a well-stocked log fireplace, kitchen and tea-making facilities, fine linen, air-conditioning and electric blankets (in winter). The view is magnificent and the sunsets spectacular. Breakfast is served in the main house and is always exceptional - complete with ostrich egg omelette. There is plenty to do on the farm, including easy walks, bird-watching, canoeing and mountain-biking (bikes can be hired at the main house). The world-renowned Cango Caves, numerous ostrich show farms and the Cango Wildlife Ranch are all located nearby. At sunrise you can join the highly-acclaimed Meerkat Magic tour, where you have the unique opportunity of following wild meerkats in their natural environment. Please be sure to book this excursion in advance.
